Inspecting Your Trees After a Winter Storm

Winter brings volatile weather and severe storms that can damage your home and property. You may think that once the weather clears after a big storm that the danger has passed but you may have more damage than you know. Although you survived this storm without damage, there may be trees on your property that were injured by the storm, posing a risk in the future. After any big storm, take the time to inspect your trees for possible storm damage.

Winter storms are notorious for bringing down trees, often causing damage to homes, garages and vehicles, even fatally injuring people. But it is not always the current storm that is to blame for the fall. A previous weather occurrence may have damaged the tree to make it ready to fall the next time any wind, snow or ice came its way. In many cases property damage or injuries could have been avoided if the property owner would have inspected their trees after the last big storm.

Once the storm is over, take a walk through your yard and pay close attention to your trees. Are their broken limbs that are hanging precariously among the branches or major damage to the trunk of the tree? Are the roots exposed on any trees, possibly leaning due to soil erosion? These all can be signs of damage to your trees that could cause problems the next time there are high winds or heavy precipitation.

When you notice damage to your trees, call your local tree service. They can remove any dangerous limbs and even entire trees if needed. It is worth the investment to prevent possible damage to your home, or worse, a severe injury to someone in your family.

Tree Hazards

Healthy trees add beauty, shade and vibrancy to a home. They also need care and maintenance to avoid becoming an eyesore, or worse, a hazard. Much of the work required to keep a tree healthy needs to be done by a professional arbor care service. Particularly for larger trees, there’s not much that can be done safely by the homeowner other than light pruning of low-hanging limbs.

Trees on your property may present hazards for a number of reasons. Limbs may be obstructing power lines. Their canopies may need to be thinned to avoid uprooting in high winds. Unhealthy or loose limbs may need to be removed before they fall, risking personal and property damage.

Your professional tree service will be able to take care of all of these things for you, so you don’t need to climb trees or ladders on your own.

Tree stumps can make lawn care a hassle, be a trip hazard in certain locations or just get in the way of your building or landscaping plans. A tree service that offers stump grinding and chipping will make quick work of taking that tree stump down to size. Get rid of the surface roots that are threatening your vegetable garden or foundation. Your professional arbor care service provider can convert the stump chips into topsoil for reuse, or you can use it for mulching your property.

Whether you need a tree removed, treated for disease, or just pruned for a more attractive appearance, finding a local professional tree service will make your property a healthier and safer environment for your family and your fauna. Add some curb appeal to your home, and firewood to your hearth!

Do You Have Dangerous Trees on Your Property?

Every year thousands of trees come crashing down during storms, especially in the volatile winters months, resulting in millions of dollars in home and property damage. While home insurance may cover some of the costs of repairs, it can result in higher premiums for insurance or the company may drop the homeowner for filing a claim. Many of these storm damage issues could have been prevented with the removal of dangerous trees before the storm hit.

Tree Danger Signs

If you have trees on your property that are unhealthy or compromised, they could be in danger of falling during the next big storm. The average cost of storm damage to a home is estimated to be between 1,800-$7,000. It is much more cost effective and convenient to have dangerous trees removed before they cause major damage. Here are some danger signs that a tree may be at risk for falling:

  • Leaning trees, especially those with roots exposed on opposite side of the lean
  • V or U shaped multiple trunks – these types of trees tend to break at the split point even when healthy
  • Dead branches
  • Decay or rot in the trunk
  • Fungus or moss growing on trunk and/or roots

If you have any trees that are showing some danger signs, call your local tree service. They can inspect your trees and determine whether they are a danger of falling. In many cases they may just need pruning or care to bring them back to a healthy, safe state. However, if any do need to be removed, it is much less expensive to have a tree removed than to pay for extensive damage to your home during the next storm.

Get Your Firewood Now for This Winter

Last winter brought extreme temperatures for much of the country. Even areas less prone to cold weather were hit with storms that took out power and lasted for weeks. Be prepared for any cold weather that comes your way this winter by stocking up on firewood now. Here are a few ideas to get the wood you need this summer to keep you warm this winter.

Fall Dangerous Trees

Do you have old or diseased trees that are a hazard on your property? If you have been considering have them removed, they could be a great source for firewood this winter and the next. The benefit of having firewood for those cold weeks can offset the cost of removal. Contact your local tree service about removal and ask about having them cut your removed tree into firewood.

Removing Dead Limbs

Large trees can have limbs that can be just as damaging as a fallen tree if they crash down during a storm. If you still have limbs on your trees that are dead or damaged, have them removed to protect your property. Those large limbs are also a great source of firewood.

Have Firewood Delivered Now

Did you know that some tree services offer firewood delivery? They turn the trees they remove into excellent, seasoned firewood for customers that have a wood burning stove. Now is the time to get your firewood while the demand is low. Don’t wait for that first cold snap to hit.

It is easy to forget about the cold of winter in the dog days of summer, but now is the right time to replenish your firewood supply. Call your local tree service to explore one of these options to get stocked up for winter.

Keeping Your Trees Safe from Disease and Insect Infestation

Many trees live hundreds of years without ever succumbing to disease or insect infestation. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Too often young trees will become victim to a fast-spreading disease that can wipe out dozens of trees in the same area just a short period of time. Your trees add beauty, shade and value to your home, so don’t lose them to preventable disease or infestation. Here are a few ways to protect your trees from harm.

  • Inspect for signs of disease. Although there are many different kinds of tree disease, the signs are often very similar. Regularly inspect the trees on your property for signs that they may be fighting disease. Dead leaves, needles, bark and branches on an otherwise healthy tree can be signs of a disease attacking your tree.
  • Inspect for insect infestation. There are many insects that can bring down a healthy tree. Often they will overtake a tree by laying eggs on their leaves and hurting the trees ability to obtain nutrients. Look for signs of leaves with eggs or blisters on their surface.
  • Contact a local tree service or arborist. The best way to protect your trees is to hire a local tree service for annual tree maintenance. They can inspect your trees, educate you on possible insect problems, common tree diseases in your area and offer preventive treatments to ward off attack.

There is no reason to lose your beautiful trees when a small amount of preventive care will thwart most diseases and insect infestations. Do your part by keeping a close eye on your trees and having annual tree inspections and treatment through a qualified tree service.

Spring Tree Limb Removal

Winter storms may have left your yard a mess of branches, leaves and other debris. With summer just around the corner, now is the time to spring clean your yard. While raking up the debris may be easy enough, it is not just the branches on the ground that you need removed. Above your head, there may be branches and limbs just waiting to come crashing down in the next storm.

Inspecting Your Trees for Damage

The last winter was severe in many regions, with colder temperatures and more storms than average. This extreme weather may have compromised some of the branches and limbs on your trees, leaving many of them ready to fall. It is important to inspect your trees to identify any branches that may be hazardous and have them removed before they cause damage or injury.

When doing spring yard clean up, inspect all your large trees for dead branches. Look for limbs that are separated from the tree, yet still entangled in other branches. Also inspect for limbs that are no longer producing needles or leaves; these may be still attached even though they are no longer alive. Dead branches can break loose in a storm and become very dangerous if they become air borne.

Tree limbs can be very heavy and need professional assistance to have them removed, especially when they are still partially attached. Your local tree service can safely remove these dead limbs and branches, plus many offer yard debris clean up and removal. This is also a good time to have them inspect the health of your trees to look for signs of infestation or disease, ensuring your trees are healthy for the summer ahead.

Are Your Trees in Danger of Disease?

For most homeowners, the trees on their property are a treasured part of their home. They provide beauty, shade and character that would be sorely missed if they were gone. Unfortunately, trees are susceptible to many diseases which can spread rapidly through a town or neighborhood. Once trees are stricken with disease, often the only solution is to have them removed. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent deadly diseases from affecting your trees in the first place with annual tree treatments.

Prevention is Key

Although some tree diseases can be treated and cured, the best option is to prevent these diseases before they get a foothold on your property. Depending on where you live and the trees you own, there may be several diseases you need to prevent. Professional tree service companies often offer preventive treatments, which can be applied every year to prevent disease.

There are several reasons that you should trust disease prevention to the experts versus trying to protect your trees on your own, including:

–          Tree inspection. Your tree expert can inspect your trees for signs of disease or insect infestation. If they are already diseased, you may need a different treatment.

–          Local knowledge. Different areas and trees have different diseases. Your local tree expert will know what diseases are prevalent in your area and which treatments are best for your particular trees.

–          Education. Having a yearly examination and treatment of your trees by a tree expert is a great way to learn more about your trees and how to care for them.

Before the summer is in full swing, bringing with it the spread of insects and disease, call your local tree professionals to schedule an inspection and treatment service. It’s the best way to protect your trees and keep them healthy for decades to come.

Best Times to Start Pruning Your Trees

Pruning trees is important to their health and safe growth. Regular pruning can, when properly performed, remove dead branches with the potential to fall and cause damage to your property, as well as enhance the beauty and growth of your trees. However, some times of the year are better for pruning than others, depending on the tree and what you’re trying to achieve. As spring approaches, now is the time to start planning your tree pruning for the year.

Late Winter Pruning

Most trees can safely be pruned in late winter, usually between February and March, without affecting their health. This is generally the ideal time to prune, since spring will promote new growth and will help the tree heal from the pruning. It’s best to wait until the coldest months have ended, right before the weather starts warming for spring.

Spring and Summer Pruning

In some cases, spring or summer pruning can be beneficial. To direct or dwarf growth, pruning in the summer is best, after the blooming period of spring. To increase blooms, either prune after the tree blooms in early summer, or in early spring for trees that bloom in the summer.

Avoid Fall Pruning

In most cases, fall is the time to avoid pruning your trees. Cutting branches right before the winter can leave them open to damage from frost or freezing temperatures.

If you have a wide variety of trees in need of pruning, they may need to be done at different times of the year between late winter and mid-summer. Contact your local tree service professional to find out the best time to schedule a tree pruning appointment for all of your trees this year.

Three Good Reasons to Remove an Old Stump

Do you have an old stump that’s taking up space in your yard? Maybe you tried using it as a planter or hiding it behind flowers, but while that may work for a year or two, many stumps begin to take on a life of their own after a few seasons. They can begin growing new trees and other plants, taking over your yard. If you’ve been putting off having that old stump removed, here are three good reasons to finally get rid of it this spring:

  1. Free up your yard space. Have you been considering expanding your patio, planting a garden or building a gazebo, yet that old stump is in the way? As long as this protruding object is taking up room in your yard, you’re limited in what you can do with the space.
  2. Make landscaping easier. Tree stumps are a pain when it comes to mowing and landscaping your yard. Stumps tend to attract other plants, making it a constant battle to keep those tree sprouts and vines in check. They also can make mowing a chore, creating an obstacle right in the middle of your lawn.
  3. Aesthetic and curb appeal. An old stump can detract from the beauty of your home and landscaping. If creating curb appeal is important to you, or you just want a cleaner, more attractive yard, it’s time to finally remove that old stump.

Your local tree service professional can give you options for stump removal, giving you back your yard just in time for spring. Stump grinding is an affordable option which can be done in a few hours, getting rid of that old stump for good.

Preventative Tree Limb Removal

As the winter storms roll through, there’s bound to be some damage done to trees in your area. There are countless numbers of trees that come crashing down during the winter, some causing extensive damage to homes, or worse, resulting in injuries. Often, limbs are only damaged in one storm, waiting for the next to hit and send those damaged limbs flying. In between storms, homeowners can protect their home and family from tree limb damage or injury with preventative tree limb removal.

What to Look For

After a big storm, there’s usually a mess for homeowners to clean up. Scattered sticks and patio ornaments may be strewn across the lawn, along with large tree branches. When you’re cleaning up ater a storm, don’t just focus on the ground; take a moment to look up and determine what damage may be lurking in the trees above.

Often, tree limbs will be completely severed from the tree to which they belong, but still caught in the surrounding branches. It only takes one big wind storm to throw these branches from the tree, sending them hurtling into your roof, car or child. Instead of waiting for the inevitable, take preventative steps to remove those dangerous loose limbs before they cause any damage.

Keep in mind, many of these larger limbs can weight hundreds of pounds, and may be hazardous for you to remove on your own. For your own safety, call in a tree removal specialist to discard of large branches. They can safely remove all loose limbs and inspect your trees to ensure they can safely withstand the next storm. The cost of preventative removal is a fraction of the cost of repairing property damage resulting from a broken tree limb moving at high speeds in strong winds, certainly worth the investment.
