Protecting Your Property from Tree Storm Damage

Every year hundreds of thousands of homeowners have damage to their home due from trees during storms. From branches falling on cars parked in the driveway to entire trees crashing through the roof of a home, trees can cause a large amount of damage and bodily injury when they break loose in a storm. While not all tree storm damage can be prevented, there are ways to minimize the risk. Here are a few options:

  • Pruning. Keeping your trees pruned is not just for aesthetics and healthy trees. Once a year, your trees should have any weak or dead branches remove that could break off in a storm to protect your property and family. Big, broken limbs are referred to as “widow makers” for good reason. Have them safely removed by a professional tree service.
  • Crown reduction. Similar to pruning, crown reduction can allow high winds to flow through the top of a tree, instead of blowing it over. This can also let in more light and can offer health benefits to the tree.
  • Tree removal. If you have a hazardous tree that is weak, dying or diseased, have it removed before it causes serious damage or injury. Preventive removal is much less expensive than the cost of repairing your home, or worse, paying for medical bills due to an injury.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you have large trees on your property, call your local tree service to have them inspected for possible hazards. It is better to pay to have them pruned or removed now than suffer the expensive consequences in the middle of the next big storm.
